DEFINING STORIES, ROUND 8: Razgatlioglu suffers huge crash and is ruled out, van der Mark steps up in France
Round 8 was the most pivotal of the season as the Championship leader crashed for just a second time in the entirety of the year, suffering a traumatic pneumothorax
By the time the summer celebrations and pool party of Portimao was over, it was looking like a matter of when and not if Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) takes the title. However, on a first flying lap of FP2 at Magny-Cours, the whole of the paddock was rocked by a huge crash for the #54 and although he could walk away, the title was now hanging by a thread. Teammate Michael van der Mark was on hand to get back to winning ways, whilst Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) would crash from Race 1. Enjoy Race 1 and Race 2 here and catch-up on all the drama from Magny-Cours with the UNFILTERED here.
TOPRAK’S FP2 FALL: out until Aragon, the title race blown open
Losing the front at Turn 14, Toprak fell and hit the safety barrier before coming back on to the track. Horrified faces at BMW but at least the Turkish star was able to walk away. Out for the round and likewise for Cremona, his 92-point lead was now his own catch fencing in a 2024 title race that had erupted. A chance for Bulega to add insult to Toprak’s injury, as well as for Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) to hit form.
VAN DER MARK WINS: 3 years waiting and BMW’s weekend saved
In Race 1, flag-to-flag conditions and the only blunder of his rookie season for Bulega Starting on intermediates, he didn’t complete a lap and crashed at the chicane, missing an open goal to strike big on Toprak’s absence. BMW’s 13-race run looked like it’d come to an end but without a win in three years, Michael van der Mark had other ideas as he became the sixth different winner of the season in wet conditions. BMW’s weekend got better in Race 2 as, after a Race 1 blunder from the lead on the wrong tyres, Garrett Gerloff’s (Bonovo Action BMW) podium drought ended and the American returned to the box for P3, a first for Michael Galinski’s team.
